Storyteller Spotlight: Black & Sexy TV

Roomie Lover FriendsPIN IT!

Going Boldly Where TV Won’t Go…that’s how a headline on Ebony.com described Black & Sexy TV. Created by dynamic duo Dennis Dortch and Numa Perrier this YouTube channel digital content network has become one of my most addictive destinations.

I LOVE all things Black & Sexy TV and have referenced one of my (former…well until next season anyway) favorite fictional couples from Roomie. Lover. Friends. Whether it’s the comment section on YouTube, Twitter or Facebook or face-to-face with another fanatic we get into the nitty-gritty. We quote them (“You in control. You run the show.”). We talk about the characters like we KNOW them. To a certain extent, we do.

Oftentimes “African-American stories” are either of a historical context (i.e. slavery, civil rights era or some discriminatory act), a Tyler Perry dramedy full of slapstick comedy or the typical rom-com fare (some independent, beautiful Black woman looking for love or a reunion of college friends at a wedding/funeral). Don’t get me wrong I enjoy all of these stories as well, but some days I just want to see people who look like me talking about and doing the things that I do. Or as Seinfeld would call it: a show about nothing.

…We try to create something that is a reflection of us, which is also a reflection of the fans. I think seeing a reflection of yourself and things that feel more realistic is an alternative,” founder and creator Dennis Dortch told BlackWebSeries.com.

The authenticity of the characters and real dialogue drive these stories forward in a way I don’t often see. I like the ‘everyday’ stories this network tells. Granted some of the plot lines can get a little crazy (in a good and funny way), these characters are ‘regla folks’ and I love that.

Here are my top episodes from my three favorite shows, along with the moments that made me go: YESSS!!!

Roomie. Lover. Friends. The hilarious tension at that breakfast table. Hmmph. It was hard to choose a favorite as there were so many moments that I was on edge. What’s real? The (self-inflicted) confusion and ego in the relationships.

Hello Cupid. Now I’m not gonna lie, it took me a minute to get into Hello Cupid. However, around episode seven is when I started talking to the screen. Now you know the characters are good when you TALK to them. I promise I’m not that person in the movie theater. But the end of episode six–whoo Lord.

That Guy. I can’t think of anything I’ve seen that does what That Guy does. It gives a real and raw picture of “regular” guys. I’ve spotted so many of my platonic guy friends and even myself in the female character. So to see a guy “get into his feelings” was surely a moment.

They have lots of stories to tell. Catch up and watch all of them on YouTube. Follow them on Twitter and Facebook.
