Storyteller Spotlight: Ava Duvernay’s Brand Interpretations

I stan for Ava Duvernay. “I Will Follow” (on Netflix) and “Middle of Nowhere” (not on Netflix, but saved in my queue) are two of my favorite films. Beyond her films that showcase a slice of life often left untold, winning Best Director at Sundance, her founding of AFFRM, one MORE thing I admire about Miss Duvernay is her ability to tell brand stories.

I can’t help it. It’s the publicist in me. I love a good story that showcases the core of a company or brand–sometimes without words. My gut says it’s the publicist in her, too, that helps her deliver such stunning content like this:

The publicist in me wants to see more of this type of creativity and presentation. The customer in me needs this authentic experience. The storyteller in me is saying YES!

[…] I’m one of those people who stan certain directors/writers (you’ve read me swoon over Ava Duvernay whose Selma is getting awesome reviews unsurprisingly). All that to say my expectations for Beyond […]

Can you explain this a little more.

I hope I’m explaining it right: These two videos are advertisements for two brands, but they don’t feel like it. They don’t feel like it because she tells a story and the product placement is subtle. It’s also really good and drives a lot of buzz/media about the product that ordinarily wouldn’t happen. Also, the way she tells the story (very authentic, visual and aspirational), the characters reflect the customer so you’re more apt to purchase or think it’s a brand that “gets” you.
