Explore African American culture with Google.

Hmm, that sounds interesting, I thought to myself when I saw the link on the Google search home page. It wasn’t accompanied with a fancy Google Doodle or anything and honestly I wasn’t expecting much. Maybe they compiled a list of inventions by African-Americans or something like that because that’s how most recognize Black History Month. Yet, when I clicked, I silently thought WHOA. The Google Cultural Institute (which I didn’t know even existed) presents various exhibits and nearly 500 visual items to click through and learn more about. You can sort based on place, person, media type, and date.

According to a press release from the U.S. Department of the Interior, “The Google Cultural Institute uses technologies similar to Google’s Street View – which provides 360-degree views on Google Maps of locations around the world — to photograph and virtually map important artifacts, photos, records and works of art to share important material with global audiences and digitally preserve them for future generations.”

Don’t let the little, boring link fool you. There are some hidden gems that allow you to truly explore in a different way.
